Occupy Detroit One Year Anniversary

ANOTHER DETROIT IS POSSIBLE!

One year ago Occupy Detroit swept through downtown from the Spirit of Detroit to Grand Circus Park with over 1,000 attending through the day and evening. Speakers spoke and let us know a NEW WORLD IS POSSIBLE – what it would take is being engaged in the movement to bring it from spoken word to a life changing opportunity.

Last year on October 10 a host of people came to Spirit Of Hope Church to learn how to participate as the Occupy Movement came to Detroit. That first night our numbers exceeded the capacity of the church and the meeting moved outside.

ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 14, 2012

We celebrate, reflect, and discuss the evolving movement and how Version 2 of Occupy Detroit will launch. Lessons learned, issues fought and continuing at present will be discussed. Those engaged in action, making a difference in their lives and those they touch will share how a movement impacted their live over the past year and what the FUTURE holds in the PRESENT and beyond.

In… This Hood of Ours

Sunday, May 27 Occupy Detroit held its 68th General Assembly at the current encampment of This Hood of Ours at West Chicago and Appoline (west of Meyers). We had a wonderful blend of regulars and people from the neighborhood attending and talking.

yearindetroit:

This has been the week of new. Our apartment got painted, I helped open a new Apple Store, and I’ve learned some new things and met some new people.

The apartment getting painted is no small thing. The walls were pretty scuffed, and I can’t even imagine what went on in this place to make the walls look like they did. Drug violence, domestic abuse, rave, murder? There were literally scuffs everywhere. Now the place really feels like home. We’re moved in. We’re here. AND we finally have a kitchen table. It feels like settling in for the winter hibernation.

The other big thing is opening a new Apple Store. Because the company is so crazy about secrecy, I can’t talk about it too much. What I can say is that I really enjoy my job, and coming into a new store everyday is still very exciting. I spent four days this past week working in the new store before it opened to customers. Seeing the attention to detail in everything, and the demand for excellence in the appearance of everything, made me appreciate the store and the company on a new level. The demand for perfection is refreshing. I work in a business that has sparked a cultural phenomenon, and not many people can say that. This thought has made me enjoy going into work more. It’s close to when I first started working for Apple two years ago. I’m part of something important to … [read more] Continue reading

Kevin Kaminski – Occupy Detroit Poetry

yearindetroit:

This is the beginning of an audio clip taken from my walk through Occupy Detroit. Because Tumblr only allows one audio upload per day, I will upload the remainder tomorrow.

The clip here is the beginning of when my friend Braley, spy/undercover agent extraordinaire, started recording our conversation with Wayne. I learned a whole new level of interviewing techniques this night. Here I have Wayne’s song, and the freestyle the Peanut let loose immediately after.

Tomorrow, I will post the remainder of the audio. The second half of the audio largely contains a conversation Braley had with a woman we met who went by the name “Detroit.”
