Everyone introduced themselves, about 20 people. Three or four were Goldengate Restoration Project residents.

 

Occupy 1yr Anniversary (17-Sep):

  • Waistline suggested we do a retrospective piece on the website.
  • Someone (Jennifer?) suggested a parade
  • Along with the parade, Sarah suggested gathering at Grand Circus Park
  • Roseanne suggested a livestream of events coordinated with other events around the country
  • Waistline and Erik will work with Roseanne on this
  • Joseph suggested flyers be handed out during parade

 

Proposals:

Jennifer – Re-Imagine OccupyDetroit

  • Inspired by Grace Lee Boggs and her Re-Imagine Detroit and Re-Imagine Work initiatives
  • Discuss how to Re-Imagine OccupyDetroit at General Assembly on September 15
    • OD modeled on OccupyWallStreet, but OD has different aspirations
    • Need to reach out to new people, bring original members back
    • Camping in Grand Circus was a bad idea for Detroit – there are so many un-occupied buildings, focus should be on seizing those (Sarah)
    • Who will facilitate the meeting and bring community in? (Sarah)
    • Education should go with outreach

Sarah – Money for 5900 Bedbug Eradication

  • 5900 Michigan Ave has a bedbug infestation
  • Residents started rent-strike in protest
  • Landlord agreed to fumigate
  • Proposed:
    • OD offers $350 to assist with expenses
    • Help find washer and dryer for building
    • Purchase plastic bags and detergent

81st General Assembly Minutes: 11-Aug-2012 – 5900 Michigan Ave

Proposals:

Yusef Shakur proposed that OccupyDetroit sponsor a second event to provide school supplies to kids:

  • “Embracing Our Families To Rebuild Our Communities”
  • 25-Aug, 1-6 PM
  • Requested a $700 budget for supplies
    • Bouncer/Moon Walk for kids
    • Porta johns
    • Food service supplies
    • Water
  • CVS, Michigan Welfare Rights are sponsors
  • Jim will assist with press releases
  • Others can assist, contact Yusef
  • PROPOSAL APPROVED

Joseph Black, from The Black Media Group, proposed that OccupyDetroit endorse “Occupy The Vote” event

  • No financial commitment required
  • Music event scheduled for 5-Oct at St. Andrews Hall
    • Staff will assist attendees with voter registration
  • Rally will be held at Campus Martius before the concert, attendees will march to St. Andrews
  • Hans emphasized we should be careful not to imply endorsements for candidates through participation with Occupy The Vote

79th OccupyDetroit GA: Highlights

Aside from the solar panels provided by OccupyDetroit, and now installed and operational at the Goldengate Restoration Project (Fireweed Universe City), some great things were said at the 28-July General Assembly, which was held at the Goldengate Restoration Project, along with the generous support of those living and creating a sustainable existence there.

Lee (from Media) announced that artists are wanted to paint murals on buildings on Livernois (btw Outerdrive and Greenfield). This area is part of the 12th Precinct, and a local neighborhood group works with them to bring some art to dreary walls. Contact Lee in the Media Working Group.

Erik noted that the vigil would continue outside Jennifer Britt’s house to prevent her eviction, despite the temporary stay achieved last week with the help of Hansen Clarke, Senator Levin, and Senator Stabenow.

Jasahn mentioned the re-opening of the 2nd Precinct, and the fact that the police there are progressive-minded, and invited OccupyDetroit to set up a table at the re-opening celebration on Friday (3-Aug).

The Housing Is A Human Right Coalition, along with Ryder Busch (sp?), intend to take over vacant houses under the Nuisance Abatement Act, and populate them with homeless mothers and veterans. Rakiba works with this group. She mentioned they need volunteers with building skills to prepare houses for occupancy.
